Robert Walser: Looking at Pictures

The interior of this book as well as the case wrap are both printed on woodfree Kasadaka paper. The case and jacket are matt varnished for added protection; the varnish adds a slight metallic sheen. The book’s most interesting feature is the traditional technique of hand tipping 4 color images onto a printed sheet. This was historically used to save on cost of printing 4 color throughout the book. The book block is printed 1 color black and only 1 sheet is printed with all the images, and then individually cut and glued on the page.

In Looking at Pictures, the Swiss writer’s essays consider Van Gogh, Manet, Rembrandt, Cranach, Watteau, Fragonard, Bruegel, and his own brother Karl. The pieces also discuss general topics such as the differences between painters and poets.
