The Cooper Hewitt collection handbook, Making Design, is beautifully presented in this package. Designed by Irma Boom with 5 separate colored jackets (red, yellow, black, fluorescent pink and glow-in-the-dark), this 924-page museum catalog features various PMS colors, sprayed edges, and French fold jacket. Each edition is printed with PMS color jacket and corresponding sprayed edge, giving the illusion of colored box. The fluorescent pink jacket has fluorescent pink spray edges; similarly the glow in the dark jacket has glow in the dark ink sprayed edges. The jacket features glow in the dark ink on the text, and the spine is glued to book cover allowing for a continuous design. The layflat binding enables the customer to appreciate over 210,000 objects from the Cooper Hewitt’s permanent collection with one object featured on each page.
Making Design is the first in a number of exhibitions devoted to showcasing Cooper Hewitt’s extensive collection—over 210,000 objects spanning thirty centuries. Much of the collection has been relatively unknown to the public. Presented in modular display systems designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, these fresh, dynamic installations celebrate the making of design.
